Discovering Cappadocia

After exploring Istanbul, Bursa, Izmir, and Çeşme, we finally reached the destination we were most curious about – Cappadocia. This historical region in central Turkey has a rich history, with its name first recorded in the late 6th century BC.

Exploring Göreme

Our adventure began in Göreme, an ideal starting point for:

  • Hiking through the unique landscape
  • Renting scooters for exploration
  • Discovering ancient cave dwellings

Just a few hundred meters from our hostel, we found ourselves surrounded by spectacular rock formations where people have lived in caves for centuries.

Unexpected Discoveries

Our journey through Cappadocia was full of surprises:

  1. The Key to Adventure

    • Met three women collecting leaves
    • Helped them with their task
    • Received a mysterious key as a reward
    • Unlocked a hidden chamber in the rocks
  2. Human Connections

    • Met Umut, a 17-year-old from Afghanistan
    • Learned about his journey to support his family
    • Witnessed his transformation from reserved to open
    • Shared in his excitement about an upcoming Istanbul trip

Reflections on Freedom and Privilege

Our time in Cappadocia prompted deep reflections:

"Su Ji and I can travel in Turkey as long as we want, feeling truly free. But Umut spends 95% of his time in the hostel, serving guests and maintaining the household."

This contrast made me consider:

  • The privilege of being able to travel freely
  • How different life could be based on circumstances of birth
  • The importance of appreciating our opportunities

Thoughts on Jealousy and Trust

Our experience also led to personal growth:

"I realized how much I dislike jealousy. Su Ji can make her own decisions, and because I love her, I also trust her."

Key realizations:

  • Jealousy often stems from insecurity
  • True love includes trust and freedom
  • Personal confidence is more attractive than possessiveness

Final Thoughts

Cappadocia offered more than just stunning landscapes:

  • Ancient history coming to life
  • Meaningful human connections
  • Personal growth and reflection
  • A reminder of life's different paths

As we prepared to leave for Cambodia, we carried with us not just memories of the unique landscape, but also valuable lessons about trust, privilege, and the beauty of human connection.
