What happens when you offer a free watermelon in Turkey

The Joy of Sharing

One of the most beautiful aspects of travel is the infinite possibilities it offers. You can:

  • Visit tourist attractions
  • Explore local streets
  • Savor delicious food
  • Connect with fellow travelers
  • Or try something completely unexpected

The Inspiration

Years ago, I met a Czech traveler named Petr Krejčík, who always sought unique ways to experience the world (you can read more on his blog www.nestereo.cz - Czech language only). He once shared a story about offering watermelon to students on a US campus, and this simple act of kindness stuck with me.

Now, traveling through Turkey, the idea resurfaced: "Why not try the same thing here?"

Overcoming Fears

The journey began with overcoming personal barriers:

  • Stepping out of my comfort zone
  • Facing the fear of judgment
  • Wondering if it would be socially acceptable

But curiosity won out, and we decided to give it a try.

The Experiment

Su Ji and I prepared for our social experiment:

  1. Purchased a delicious watermelon
  2. Acquired an empty paper box
  3. Walked 30 minutes to a local park
  4. Used the box as both a sign ("FREE WATERMELONS") and a cutting board

The Results

We positioned ourselves near a busy sidewalk, and the response was overwhelming:

  • People laughed and smiled
  • Many waved and approached us
  • Some took photos with us
  • We received roses as gifts
  • About 20 locals stopped to chat

The Magic of Connection

For one hour, we experienced something magical:

  • Strangers became friends
  • Language barriers melted away
  • Food became a universal language
  • Simple acts created lasting memories

Lessons Learned

This experience taught me valuable lessons:

  1. Small gestures can create big happiness
  2. Unusual actions attract positive attention
  3. Inspiration can be passed from person to person
  4. Stepping out of your comfort zone leads to growth

A Challenge to You

Would you try something similar? Sometimes the simplest acts can create the most meaningful connections. Let me know if you'd be willing to step out of your comfort zone and try something unexpected! 😊
